New Delhi, Nov 14: On World Diabetes Day, health experts emphasize the lesser-known impact of diabetes on the skin and feet, in addition to its well-known effects on the pancreas and insulin production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research-INdia Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) revealed that 10% of Indians are diabetic, with 101 million diagnosed cases and 136 million pre-diabetic individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts predict a rapid increase in these numbers due to sedentary lifestyles and increased consumption of unhealthy foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“High blood sugar levels in individuals with diabetes can lead to a range of skin complications, including dry skin, slow wound healing, infections, and various dermatological issues,” says Dr. Mohit Saran, Consultant – Internal Medicine and Diabetologist at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Mohd Asif, Co-founder of Cara Clinic Mumbai, stresses the holistic approach needed to address these issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Diabetes goes beyond blood sugar levels, impacting skin health in several ways. A dermatologist’s personalized skin treatment and skincare regimen can help prevent skin problems for people with diabetes,” he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Controlling blood sugar levels through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper medication is crucial, according to dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon Dr. Saran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also recommends maintaining good hygiene practices and regular moisturizing to prevent dryness and itching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the context of foot complications, Dr. Harish Kumar, Clinical Professor and Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, highlights that around 15% of people with diabetes will face diabetic foot problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This underscores the importance of preventive measures, including the use of appropriate diabetic footwear, daily foot examinations, cleanliness, and moisture maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India, known as the diabetes capital of the world, is witnessing a troubling increase in Type 2 diabetes prevalence among young adults. The urgency for increased awareness and preventive measures is crucial, given that diabetes affects approximately 15 to 20% of adults globally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels, adherence to medication, a balanced diet, and good skincare habits are crucial steps to mitigate the impact of diabetes on skin and feet.
