Mumbai, March 27: Sadanand V. Date, a decorated IPS officer known for his valor during the 26\/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, has been appointed as the new Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), it was announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Date, currently serving as the Director General of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), brings with him a wealth of experience garnered over his illustrious 34-year career in policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born into a modest family in Pune, the 58-year-old IPS officer faced numerous challenges early in life, including the loss of his father at the age of 15. Undeterred by adversities, Date worked as a newspaper delivery boy for nearly a decade to support his education, eventually earning degrees in Commerce and a PhD from Savitribai Phule Pune University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Driven by a passion for public service, Date cracked the UPSC exams in 1999, securing a position in the Indian Police Service (IPS). His dedication and commitment to duty saw him rise through the ranks, holding pivotal positions at both the state and central levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his tenure with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Date pursued a Humphrey Fellowship at the University of Minnesota, specializing in the study of white-collar and organized crimes in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Date’s fearless leadership and bravery came to the fore during the 26\/11 Mumbai attacks, where he played a crucial role in confronting the terrorists, including capturing Ajmal Kasab alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In another display of courage, Date thwarted an attempt on the life of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray in 2008, saving hostages on a hijacked bus and neutralizing the assailant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recognized for his gallantry and meritorious service, Date has been honored with prestigious awards, including the President\u2019s Medal and the President\u2019s Police Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
