Hyderabad, November 29,2024:<\/strong> The Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR) has achieved a groundbreaking innovation in sustainable agriculture with the development of a biopolymer-based seed coating system. This patented technology, created by ICAR-IIOR scientists, incorporates micronutrients to enhance seed germination, improve plant growth, and significantly boost crop yields. This innovation, which aims to replace harmful synthetic polymer coatings, is set to address longstanding issues in chemical farming and soil degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a significant step toward commercialization,<\/strong> Hyderabad-based Srikar Agritech Limited and Kolkata-based Yaduka Agritech signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICAR-IIOR. The signing ceremony took place on Thursday at Professor Jayashankar Agricultural University,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ICAR-IIOR Campus in Rajendranagar. The event was graced by ICAR Deputy Director General Dr. T.R. Sharma, IIOR Director Dr. R.K. Mathur, Srikar Agritech CMD Linga Srinivasa Rao, and Yaduka Agritech MD Aditya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sustainable Alternative to Synthetic Coatings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional seed coatings, widely used for decades, rely on synthetic polymers that often contain chemicals harmful to soil biodiversity. Despite their usage, farmers have struggled with poor crop growth and reduced yields. Over the years, chemical farming has degraded the soil, depleting it of vital nutrients and microorganisms necessary for healthy crop growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing this challenge, IIOR scientists, led by Chief Scientist Dr. R.D. Prasad and Dr. Poorna Chandrika, embarked on an ambitious research initiative in 2015. After years of experimentation, they developed a unique biopolymer formulation that offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic coatings. This biopolymer, patented in 2023, not only protects seeds but also delivers essential micronutrients to support robust plant development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefits of the Biopolymer Coating<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, a live demonstration showcased the benefits of the biopolymer-coated seeds. Unlike synthetic coatings that contribute to soil degradation, the biopolymer system is designed to restore soil health, improve biodiversity, and enhance nutrient availability. Scientists project that this innovation could increase crop yields by at least 35%, offering hope for farmers struggling with declining productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The technology will be applied to a range of crops, including oilseeds such as groundnut, sunflower, safflower, and sesame, as well as pulses, peanuts, and rice bran. By revitalizing degraded soils, this innovation could play a pivotal role in ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture practices in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the MoU, Sreekar Agritech and Yaduka Agritech will work closely with ICAR-IIOR to develop and distribute biopolymer-coated seeds. Srikar Agritech CMD Linga Srinivasa Rao announced that the seeds will be available to farmers starting next month. He emphasized the transformative potential of this innovation, stating that it could revolutionize farming practices in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
