Chennai, March 05, 2025:<\/strong> Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin<\/strong> led an all-party meeting<\/strong> on Tuesday, where parties unanimously opposed the proposed parliamentary constituency delimitation based on population<\/strong>. The meeting strongly condemned the move, stating that it threatens India\u2019s federal structure<\/strong> and unfairly reduces the political representation of Tamil Nadu and other southern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Resolutions from the Meeting:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  1. Opposition to Population-Based Delimitation:<\/strong> The meeting rejected the idea of determining parliamentary constituencies solely based on population<\/strong>, arguing that it penalizes southern states for successfully implementing population control measures<\/strong> over the past decades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

Honoring the 2000 Prime Minister\u2019s Assurance:<\/strong> The leaders recalled that in 2000, the then-Prime Minister<\/strong> assured that parliamentary constituencies would continue to be determined based on 1971 population figures<\/strong> to encourage nationwide adoption of population control policies. They urged the current Prime Minister to reaffirm this commitment in Parliament<\/strong> and extend this framework for another 30 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

Constituency Increase Without Disproportionate Loss:<\/strong> If the number of Lok Sabha seats is increased<\/strong>, the existing proportion of constituencies among states<\/strong>\u2014based on 1971 population figures<\/strong>\u2014must be maintained.
