Hyderabad, April 18, 2025: Deccan Heritage Academy Trust Chairman Vedakumar has voiced strong concerns over the continued illegal constructions around Charminar, stating that they are the primary reason the iconic monument has not yet received UNESCO World Heritage status. Speaking at a Heritage Walk organized on the occasion of World Heritage Day, Vedakumar emphasized the urgent need to halt unauthorized structures that threaten the integrity and legacy of Hyderabad\u2019s historical treasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Although Charminar meets all the qualifications for World Heritage recognition, illegal encroachments and unauthorized buildings within a 100-meter radius of the monument are hindering the process,” he said. Citing violations of heritage protection norms, he pointed out ongoing constructions around Lad Bazaar, Sardar Mahal, and Char Kaman as major concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vedakumar flagged off the Heritage Walk at Charminar, which saw participation from heritage enthusiasts, students, historians, and members of various organizations. The walk covered significant landmarks including Lad Bazaar, Motigalli, Mehboob Chowk, Iqbal Ud Daula Devdi, Mecca Masjid Second Gate, Zilukhana, Khurshid Jah Bahadur Palace, Iqbal Ud Daula Palace, and Khilwat, showcasing Hyderabad\u2019s rich architectural and cultural legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the event, Vedakumar called for a collective movement to preserve heritage monuments. \u201cThese ancient structures are not just buildings; they are historical narratives. It is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure they are preserved for future generations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Deccan Heritage Academy Trust in collaboration with the State Department of Archaeology to include the Mudumal Megalithic Menhirs site in the UNESCO World Heritage list. \u201cWe are hopeful that the site will soon receive the recognition it deserves,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several dignitaries and experts participated in the walk, including Professor GSV Suryanarayana Murthy, Dr. Dyavanapalli Satyanarayana, Dr. G. Jayashree, Kotayya Vinjamuri, Sai Krishna, Rajeshwari, Sai Ram, Sudhakar, and members from the State Tourism Development Corporation, Hyderabad Circle of the Archaeology Department, JPRAC, Forum for Better Hyderabad, Oxford Grammar School, SRDP, Vasavi School, and Vaishnavi Architecture College.
