The planet orbits a red dwarf star in what scientists call the \u201chabitable zone,\u201d where conditions may allow liquid water to exist\u2014one of the essential ingredients for life as we know it. \u201cWe are entering a new era where we can not only detect exoplanets but study their atmospheres in exquisite detail,\u201d said one of the researchers. \u201cBut we must be careful not to jump to conclusions without rigorous validation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To that end, the team is planning further JWST observations in the coming months, hoping to strengthen the signal and raise the detection to the 5-sigma threshold\u2014equivalent to a 1-in-3.5 million chance of being wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
