Hyderabad, August 20, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 In a landmark development, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a name synonymous with coal for over a century, has now entered the high-stakes world of precious mineral exploration. For the first time in its 136-year history, the state-owned giant has secured rights to explore gold and copper reserves<\/strong> in Karnataka\u2019s Raichur district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The breakthrough came after SCCL emerged as the L-1 bidder<\/strong> in a competitive online auction conducted by the Union Ministry of Mines. The coveted license grants the company five years to explore the Devadurg block<\/strong>, spread across 199 sq. km, and assess its mining potential. If viable reserves are unearthed, SCCL will earn a 37.75% royalty<\/strong> on operations throughout the mine\u2019s lifespan\u2014a milestone that could redefine its future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Announcing the win, SCCL Chairman & MD N. Balaram<\/strong> called the achievement \u201ca proud entry into the critical minerals sector.\u201d He said, \u201cThis success marks a turning point in Singareni\u2019s history and reflects our commitment to Telangana\u2019s vision of expansion beyond coal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Telangana leadership echoed this sentiment. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy<\/strong> and Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka<\/strong> congratulated the company, stating, \u201cWith over a century of coal mining experience, Singareni is now poised to scale new heights in gold and copper exploration. This is not just a win for SCCL but for Telangana\u2019s ambition to emerge as a global mining hub.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karnataka\u2019s Golden Legacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Karnataka has long been India\u2019s treasure chest of gold. The Hutti Gold Mines<\/strong>, also located in Raichur, account for nearly 80% of India\u2019s current gold output<\/strong> at around 1.8 tonnes annually. The legendary Kolar Gold Fields (KGF)<\/strong>, once among the world\u2019s deepest mines, produced more than 800 tonnes of gold<\/strong> before shutting down in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, with Devadurg added to the exploration map, SCCL is betting big on reviving the region\u2019s golden legacy. The company has earmarked \u20b990 crore for exploration<\/strong>, with the Centre backing the project through a \u20b920 crore subsidy<\/strong>. Once exploration concludes, SCCL will submit its findings to the Union government for the next phase of mining licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic Bidding & Future Roadmap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This success was no accident. Earlier this year, the Centre floated auctions for 13 critical mineral exploration licenses. SCCL entered the fray with bids for three blocks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Platinum Group Elements (PGE)<\/strong> in Madhya Pradesh<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Rare Earth Elements (REE)<\/strong> in Andhra Pradesh<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Gold & Copper Block<\/strong> in Devadurg, Karnataka<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    By clinching the Devadurg block on August 19<\/strong>, SCCL signaled its intent to become a serious player in the critical minerals space\u2014a sector central to India\u2019s self-reliance and global competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
