Telangana Govt Approves \u20b94,051 Crore Project to Convert Overhead Power Lines into Underground Cables Across Greater Hyderabad<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyderabad, November 29, 2025:<\/strong> In a major push toward modernizing urban power infrastructure, the Telangana Government has accorded administrative approval for a massive \u20b94,051 crore project to convert the entire overhead electricity distribution network into an underground cable system across Greater Hyderabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision has been formalized through G.O.Ms.No. 43<\/strong>, issued by the Energy (Power-I) Department on Saturday. The project, proposed by the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL)<\/strong>, covers all areas falling under the erstwhile Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, including Banjara Hills Circle, Secunderabad Circle, Hyderabad Central Circle and Hyderabad South Circle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Massive Infrastructure Upgrade<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The project aims to replace the existing 33 kV, 11 kV and LT (Low Tension) overhead power lines with underground cabling, significantly enhancing the city\u2019s power reliability, safety, and visual aesthetics. Hyderabad is expected to become one of the very few cities in India with close to 100% underground electricity distribution<\/strong> in its core urban zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Combined 33 kV & 11 kV cables \u2013 73 km:<\/strong> \u20b965 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Combined 33 kV, 11 kV & LT cables \u2013 24 km:<\/strong> \u20b925 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Combined 11 kV & LT cables \u2013 1,407 km:<\/strong> \u20b9857 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Combined 33 kV & LT cables \u2013 10 km:<\/strong> \u20b97 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Main roads LT Overhead to Underground (LTOH) \u2013 825 km:<\/strong> \u20b9149 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) laying \u2013 3,899 km:<\/strong> \u20b923 crore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Why Underground Cabling?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    According to the government, undergrounding the current power network will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Improve reliability and continuity of power supply<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Reduce outages caused by rains, winds, or falling trees<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Enhance public safety by eliminating exposed wires<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Cut maintenance costs significantly<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Remove visual clutter created by overhead power lines<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Support Hyderabad\u2019s rapid urban development and global city aspirations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Execution on Turnkey Basis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      TGSPDCL has been instructed to execute the project on a turnkey basis<\/strong>, ensuring timely completion with standardized quality across all circles. The government has also emphasized the use of Aerial Bunched (AB) cables<\/strong> in narrow lanes and congested localities to minimize disruptions and ensure optimal system performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Once implemented, Hyderabad will join the ranks of modern global cities that rely on robust underground power networks to support residential, commercial, and digital infrastructure growth.
