Telangana Govt Greenlights Procurement of 3,000 MW Solar Power to Meet RPO Targets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyderabad, November 29, 2025:<\/strong> In a major step towards strengthening Telangana\u2019s renewable energy footprint, the State Government has approved the procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power in a phased manner over the next five years. The move aims to help the State meet its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) commitments while accelerating the shift towards clean and affordable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approval was accorded through G.O.Ms.No. 42<\/strong>, issued by the Energy Department on Saturday. The decision follows a detailed presentation made by the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of TGREDCO<\/strong> during the Telangana State Power Purchase Coordination Committee (TGPPCC)<\/strong> meeting held on September 13, 2025, where the State\u2019s long-term renewable energy roadmap was discussed extensively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phased Procurement Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As per the Government Order, the 3,000 MW solar capacity will be acquired through a competitive bidding process under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) route. The rollout has been divided into three stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • 1,000 MW by June 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 1,000 MW by December 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 1,000 MW by June 2027<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    While the immediate approval is for 3,000 MW, the government has also permitted TGREDCO<\/strong> to procure up to 5,000 MW of solar power<\/strong> in total, if required, based on future energy needs and RPO requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    TGREDCO to Lead Procurement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    TGREDCO has been authorised to initiate and manage the entire procurement process on behalf of Telangana\u2019s two DISCOMs. The competitive bidding will be undertaken via the ISTS route, ensuring access to affordable solar power from developers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To ensure transparency and adherence to national bidding standards, the government has appointed State Bank of India Capital Markets Limited (SBICAPs)<\/strong> as the consulting agency for the bidding and empanelment process. SBICAPs brings extensive expertise in power sector transactions and renewable energy tenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Boost to Clean Energy & RPO Compliance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The State Government noted that increasing the share of solar power in the energy mix reflects its commitment to sustainable development and climate action. The enhanced procurement will help Telangana adhere to its RPO trajectory, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and supply greener power to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Officials stated that large-scale renewable procurement will also stabilise long-term power costs, enhance energy security, and support national renewable energy goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
