Former Union Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao Passes Away at 82<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyderabad, March 11:<\/strong> Veteran politician, industrialist, and former Union Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao<\/strong> passed away at the age of 82 on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Hyderabad after suffering a brain stroke. He had been undergoing treatment since March 7, when he was admitted following the stroke, but his condition worsened despite medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born on October 1, 1943, in Dosapadu village of Krishna district in the then undivided Andhra Pradesh, Sambasiva Rao pursued Civil Engineering at National Institute of Technology Warangal<\/strong> (then known as Regional Engineering College, Warangal). Before entering politics, he established himself as a successful industrialist and entrepreneur by founding well-known construction firms such as Pragati Constructions and Progressive Constructions. Through these ventures, he earned recognition in the infrastructure sector and built a strong reputation as a self-made businessman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sambasiva Rao later stepped into active politics through the Indian National Congress<\/strong>, where he rose steadily to become one of the party\u2019s prominent leaders from Andhra Pradesh. Over the course of his political career, he was elected to the Lok Sabha<\/strong> five times. He represented Machilipatnam constituency three times\u2014in 1984, 1989, and 1998\u2014and later represented Eluru constituency in 2004 and 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the tenure of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh<\/strong>, Sambasiva Rao served as the Union Minister for Textiles in the Union Cabinet. In that role, he was credited with supporting the development of India\u2019s textile and handloom sectors and played a significant role in strengthening the industry, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within political circles, Sambasiva Rao was often described as a \u201csilent operator.\u201d Though he rarely sought public attention, he was known for his strong behind-the-scenes influence and strategic political acumen. His calm demeanor and ability to navigate complex political situations earned him respect across party lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the intense political developments surrounding the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014<\/strong>, Sambasiva Rao strongly supported the demand for a united Andhra Pradesh. At one stage, he publicly declared that he would resign from his ministerial post if the state was divided. However, the bifurcation proceeded, leading to significant political changes in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the division of the state, he distanced himself from the Congress party after nearly four decades of association. Later, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party<\/strong>, making it clear that he would not contest elections again. Although there were discussions about his possible nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the opportunity did not materialize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond politics, Sambasiva Rao was widely respected for his philanthropic activities and humanitarian outlook. Known for his straightforward nature and personal integrity, he quietly supported many individuals and social causes. Those close to him often recalled that he would never turn away anyone who approached him for help, whether financial or otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a deeply moving and unusual farewell, the family released a statement written in Sambasiva Rao\u2019s own words, expressing his reflections on life and gratitude. In the statement, he noted that he had lived a content and fulfilling life for 82 years and was bidding farewell with satisfaction. He conveyed his heartfelt wishes for his wife Hemalatha to live a long and healthy life and expressed hope that his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren would continue to live happily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The release of this farewell message even before his passing created a rare moment in public life, as media reports had earlier prematurely reported his death. The statement has been described as a historic and poignant gesture, reflecting his calm acceptance of life\u2019s final phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaders from across the political spectrum expressed deep condolences. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu<\/strong> described his passing as an irreparable loss to the state\u2019s political landscape and praised his long parliamentary career. Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Y. S. Sharmila<\/strong> termed his death a great loss to Andhra Pradesh politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, K. T. Rama Rao<\/strong> recalled Sambasiva Rao\u2019s support for the powerloom sector in Telangana during the 2013 agitation period. Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy<\/strong> also paid tribute, offering prayers for the departed soul and extending condolences to the bereaved family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sambasiva Rao is survived by his wife Hemalatha, four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His final rites are expected to be performed on Thursday at Mahaprasthanam<\/strong> in Hyderabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With his passing, Indian politics has lost a seasoned leader, respected industrialist, and compassionate humanitarian whose contributions spanned business, public service, and philanthropy.
