{"id":27823,"date":"2026-06-12T22:45:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vglobenews.com\/?p=27823"},"modified":"2026-06-12T22:45:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:15:16","slug":"iit-madras-unveils-anchor-worlds-most-detailed-3d-atlas-of-the-human-brainstem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vglobenews.com\/?p=27823","title":{"rendered":"IIT Madras Unveils ANCHOR, World\u2019s Most Detailed 3D Atlas of the Human Brainstem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chennai:<\/strong> The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has unveiled ANCHOR (Atlas of Neurochemical Characterisation of the Human Brainstem with 3D Reconstruction), described as the world&#8217;s most detailed three-dimensional atlas of the human brainstem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed by the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC), ANCHOR represents a major breakthrough in neuroscience research and provides an unprecedented view of the human brainstem at cellular resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to IIT Madras, the atlas was created using the centre\u2019s advanced high-throughput brain imaging and computing platform, which transforms whole human brains into highly detailed three-dimensional cell-resolution atlases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANCHOR comprises the most comprehensive multimodal 3D maps of the human brainstem developed so far, covering stages from the prenatal period through childhood and adulthood. The atlas integrates multiple imaging and analytical techniques to provide a detailed understanding of brain structure and organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The publicly available resource includes more than 200 brainstem nuclei and fibre tracts reconstructed from hundreds of serial brain sections. Researchers employed eight complementary immunostains overlaid across more than 500 sections, enabling highly detailed mapping of the brainstem&#8217;s complex architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure that the scientific community worldwide benefits from the project, IIT Madras has made ANCHOR freely accessible through a dedicated online platform. Researchers, clinicians and healthcare professionals across the globe can use the atlas to advance studies in neuroscience and neurological disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The atlas was officially released during the 3rd BRICS Neuroscience Symposium, held from June 5 to 7, 2026, at the IIT Madras campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre has set an ambitious goal of creating the most comprehensive collection of cell-resolution human brain maps spanning different stages of life and various neurological diseases. The centre plans to image more than 100 whole human brains across the lifespan and disease conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, SGBC has evolved into a global interdisciplinary research hub comprising more than 200 researchers, engineers and technicians, working in collaboration with 20 international partner institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praising the achievement, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, described ANCHOR as a landmark accomplishment in neurobiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a significant accomplishment in the field of neurobiology. This is a multimodal framework integrating MRI, histology and detailed chemo-architecture,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Prof. Sood, the atlas will help researchers identify specific cell populations affected by brainstem lesions, potentially leading to improved diagnosis and treatment strategies for neurological disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further noted that the project demonstrates how public investment in advanced scientific infrastructure, combined with private and philanthropic support, can lead to world-class research outcomes in frontier areas of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists believe ANCHOR will become a valuable resource for understanding brain development, neurological diseases and the intricate organisation of one of the most critical regions of the human brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has unveiled ANCHOR (Atlas of Neurochemical Characterisation of the Human Brainstem with 3D Reconstruction), described as the world&#8217;s most detailed three-dimensional atlas of the human brainstem.
