California, June 16: A US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert, killing all eight people on board in one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to officials, the aircraft went down at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time on Monday while conducting a routine test mission. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site, but initial assessments indicated that the accident was not survivable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Confirming the tragedy, Colonel James Hayes said, \u201cWe lost eight great Americans,\u201d adding that those on board included a mix of military personnel, government civilians and government contractors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the crash, Edwards Air Force Base temporarily closed its airfield, diverted inbound aircraft and suspended non-commercial visitor access to focus on emergency response and recovery operations. Officials are continuing efforts to account for all personnel involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aircraft was assigned to the base’s testing program and was reportedly involved in radar modernization activities.
