The institute is now looking for additional industry partners to expand production and make the technology more widely available.

According to IICT researchers, the product is a biocompatible tissue adhesive based on alkyl 2-cyanoacrylate technology. It is designed for rapid wound closure and tissue sealing and can provide instant bonding even under moist conditions.

The adhesive has undergone clinical trials and has been declared safe for surgical use. Researchers said its ability to bond quickly in moist environments makes it particularly useful in trauma care and emergency medical procedures.

The product can be used for tissue sealing in surgeries either independently or along with conventional sutures. It is ready to use and does not require special preparation before application.

Useful in Several Surgical Procedures

The indigenous adhesive could be useful in a range of medical procedures, including ENT, vascular, cosmetic, dental and periodontal surgeries. Its potential applications also include appendectomy, caesarean section, hysterectomy, laparoscopy and biopsy procedures.

A scientist associated with the development said the adhesive’s biocompatible formulation makes it suitable for human use and could reduce the need for sutures in selected surgeries.

The product is also expected to offer greater convenience to medical practitioners while potentially reducing discomfort for patients who otherwise require conventional suturing.

Focus on Affordable Healthcare Technology

Researchers described the product as a safe and cost-effective technology and said the aim is to make it more accessible to hospitals and emergency healthcare providers.

Established in Hyderabad in 1944, CSIR-IICT is one of the oldest laboratories under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The institute has developed several technologies and products over the years for the chemical and biotechnology sectors.

CSIR and its laboratories continue to seek industry partnerships for the development and commercialisation of indigenous technologies. Several state governments have also shown interest in adopting and promoting technologies developed by CSIR laboratories.

Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), a premier laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has developed an indigenous tissue adhesive that can rapidly close wounds following surgeries and in accident-related injuries.
