Atlanta, November 1:<\/strong> India has called on the G20 nations to pursue diplomatic solutions to major international conflicts and address disruptions to global food, energy and supply chains. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted India’s diplomatic engagement with Russia, Ukraine, Europe and the United States to protect civilian shipping, restore Black Sea grain exports and prevent attacks on energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Indian journalists in Atlanta on Saturday, following the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar described the discussions as productive and constructive. He said India had emphasised that ongoing conflicts were affecting not only the countries directly involved but also economies across the Global South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Endless wars must give way to end the war,” Jaishankar said, underlining the need for diplomatic efforts instead of military solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Engages Russia, Ukraine and Europe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Explaining India’s diplomatic initiatives concerning the Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar said New Delhi was engaging Russia, Europe and Ukraine on three key issues: safeguarding civilian ships and seafarers, restoring grain exports through the Black Sea, and preventing attacks on energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said India had held discussions with Russia and European countries and was also maintaining communication with Ukraine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Jaishankar had visited Moscow and Kyiv to pursue diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Atlanta. India was coordinating with Washington, taking into account the United States’ separate peace mediation efforts. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also aware of India’s initiatives, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food and Energy Security a Major Concern<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jaishankar said disruptions to grain exports from Russia and Ukraine had become a serious concern for developing countries, particularly those in the Global South, which depend heavily on these supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted the need to protect energy infrastructure, including refineries, electricity grids and fuel transportation vessels. However, he acknowledged that reaching an understanding on protecting energy facilities was particularly complicated because different countries had different interpretations of what constitutes energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On energy security, India cautioned against politicising energy supplies and creating distortions in international energy markets. Jaishankar said developing countries were bearing the greatest burden of shortages and disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ministers also discussed fertiliser shortages linked to disruptions in the Black Sea, Gulf and Red Sea regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Calls for Diversified Global Supply Chains<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During discussions on supply chains, India advocated geographically diversified production and manufacturing networks to reduce excessive dependence on any single country or region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaishankar cited the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of how concentrated supply chains could be disrupted. He said geopolitical conflicts and climate-related events had further highlighted the vulnerability of global production networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India also cautioned against the weaponisation of supply chains, stressing that establishing multiple manufacturing and production centres would improve global economic resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Hopes for G20 Consensus Ahead of December Summit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the absence of a consensus statement at the Atlanta meeting, Jaishankar said the G20 process had not yet reached the leaders’ summit stage. The December summit would provide further opportunities for countries to bridge differences and arrive at common ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He expressed confidence that an agreement was possible if member nations made a concerted effort. Referring to the BRICS grouping, he pointed out that countries with differing positions had managed to agree on a common statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaishankar also highlighted India’s role in maintaining dialogue among countries amid growing geopolitical divisions, saying several ministers had appreciated New Delhi’s ability to engage with different sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quad Foreign Ministers Meet in Atlanta<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Separately, the foreign ministers of the Quad countries \u2014 India, the United States, Japan and Australia \u2014 also met in Atlanta on Saturday. It was their third meeting this year, following earlier discussions in New Delhi and Manila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaishankar said the ministers believed that progress had been made in advancing the Quad’s agenda and expressed hope that future engagements would provide further direction and opportunities to expand cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The G20 brings together major advanced and emerging economies, the European Union and the African Union. India hosted the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi in 2023, which concluded with the adoption of a consensus declaration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
