US President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of further military action against Iran, warning that the United States could destroy more of the country if necessary. His remarks came as senior House Democrats prepared to challenge his administration’s handling of the conflict and push for an end to the war.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, Trump said, “I would rather not destroy the rest of the country, if possible, but maybe I’ll have to. You’ll know soon enough.”

However, the US President did not specify any timeline or potential targets for further military action, nor did he announce an order for fresh strikes.

During an Oval Office event, Trump defended the ongoing military campaign and indicated that a decision would be made on whether to escalate operations. He reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Responding to questions about reports of proposals concerning Tehran’s nuclear programme, Trump said, “They’re not doing anything without our approval.” However, he did not confirm the details of any proposal or disclose whether a formal negotiating framework had been agreed upon.

Meanwhile, senior House Democrats are preparing to use Congress to challenge the administration’s Iran policy.

Representative Gregory Meeks, the senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, outlined his proposed legislative agenda in a November 4 letter seeking support to become the committee’s chairman.

Meeks said he intended to introduce resolutions in the House to immediately terminate the President’s war with Iran and restore Congress’s role in shaping American foreign policy.

He also proposed summoning senior administration officials for public testimony on the Iran conflict, Venezuela and disputes over congressional authority concerning military action and trade.

However, his letter outlined proposed legislative and oversight measures and did not specify a date for any vote.

House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark also criticised the administration’s approach to the conflict, questioning its objectives, financial implications and strategy for bringing American troops home safely.

Speaking to CNN, Clark accused Trump of involving the United States in what she described as a reckless war without clear objectives or an exit strategy.

She said Democrats would demand answers from the administration regarding continued funding for the conflict, the safety of American military personnel and plans to bring the war to an end.

Clark also linked the conflict to rising pressure on household fuel costs.

While Meeks focused on legislative resolutions and congressional oversight, Clark highlighted the financial burden of the conflict and the need for a clear strategy to protect American troops.

The escalating Gulf conflict has also raised concerns among major Asian energy-importing countries, including India.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, connecting major Gulf oil producers with international markets. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India, China and Japan are among the principal destinations for oil transported through the strategic waterway.

Any further escalation involving Iran and the wider Gulf region could create uncertainty in global energy supplies, potentially affecting crude oil prices, shipping costs and fuel-importing economies.

With Trump keeping the possibility of further military action open and Democrats preparing congressional challenges, the future course of the Iran conflict remains uncertain.
