Tovino Thomas-Starrer Malayalam Film ‘2018 – Everyone is a Hero’ Out of Oscar Contention

New Delhi, Dec 22: India’s official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category, the Malayalam survival drama ‘2018 – Everyone is a Hero,’ starring Tovino Thomas, has been excluded from the Oscars race. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently revealed the shortlists in 10 categories for the 96th Oscars ceremony, with Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ leading with multiple nods.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film recounts the true story of the devastating rains and floods that struck Kerala in 2018. Despite addressing global issues and portraying the harsh realities of natural calamities, it did not secure a spot in the final Oscar nominations.

The movie, featuring a cast including Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, and Lal, marks the fourth Malayalam film to be India’s official Oscar entry, following ‘Guru’ (1997), ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’ (2011), and ‘Jallikattu’ (2019), none of which received nominations.

In the music categories, Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy ‘Barbie’ received five mentions, while surprises unfolded in the makeup and hairstyling category, with unexpected inclusions like ‘Beau is Afraid’ and ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter.’

Noteworthy mentions in other categories include Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and J.A. Bayona’s ‘Society of the Snow.’ The official Oscar nominees will be announced on January 23, following the nomination period from January 11 to January 16.
