India Launches UPI Services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, RuPay Card Services in Mauritius

New Delhi, Feb 12: India marked a significant milestone on Monday with the successful launch of its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. The initiative, aimed at enhancing financial connectivity between the countries, was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The introduction of UPI services allows Indians visiting Sri Lanka and Mauritius to make real-time bank transactions using their mobile phones. Similarly, Mauritian travelers to India can also utilize UPI services for payments. Furthermore, Mauritian banks will now issue RuPay cards, enabling transactions both within India and Mauritius.

The launch of these Indian services underscores the deepening economic ties between India, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius. UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), facilitates instantaneous bank transactions, enhancing convenience and efficiency in financial transactions.

Additionally, RuPay card services were introduced in Mauritius as part of this initiative. RuPay, an Indian-based card payment network, enjoys wide acceptance at retail outlets, ATMs, and online platforms globally.

This development follows NPCI International Payments Limited’s collaboration with Lyra, a renowned French expert in e-commerce and proximity payments, to introduce UPI services in France. India’s efforts to expand its digital payment ecosystem internationally reflect its commitment to fostering global financial connectivity and inclusivity.
