Microsoft Unveils DirectSR API for Seamless Integration of Super Resolution Technologies in Gaming

Microsoft has revealed its latest endeavor in gaming technology with the introduction of DirectSR, a new Windows API aimed at facilitating the integration of AI-enabled super-resolution upscaling features from leading hardware providers such as Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.

In a recent blog post, Joshua Tucker, a programme manager at Microsoft, delved into the significance of DirectSR, heralding it as a pivotal advancement poised to bridge the gap between video games and super-resolution technologies. Tucker expressed enthusiasm, highlighting DirectSR’s potential to deliver a more efficient and scalable gaming experience across various hardware configurations.

“We’re thrilled to announce DirectSR, our new API designed in partnership with GPU hardware vendors to enable seamless integration of Super Resolution (SR) into the next generation of games,” Tucker remarked.

DirectSR, according to Tucker, offers a unified framework for incorporating super-resolution solutions from multiple vendors, including Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel XeSS. This unified approach streamlines development by providing a single code path to activate diverse super-resolution technologies.

Super Resolution, a cutting-edge technique aimed at enhancing resolution and visual fidelity in games, is poised to revolutionize gaming experiences. Microsoft disclosed that DirectSR will soon be accessible in the Agility SDK as a public preview, allowing developers to experiment with the API and offer valuable feedback.

In tandem with this technological leap, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith, unveiled plans to bolster the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Spain. This initiative entails a substantial investment of $2.1 billion over the next two years, signaling Microsoft’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the realm of AI and cloud services.
