Hyderabad to Ease Traffic with New Tunnel Roads: Telangana Government’s Comprehensive Plan
Hyderabad June 07
The Telangana government has unveiled an ambitious plan to alleviate traffic congestion in Hyderabad by constructing five new tunnel roads, spanning a total length of 39 kilometers. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes Smart Traffic Management, the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (HTRIMS), expansion of metro rail services, construction of flyovers and Road Under Bridges (RUBs), as well as widening roads and junctions. Additionally, satellite townships are being developed to further ease urban congestion.

Proposed Tunnel Road Corridors:
- ITC Kohenur to Wipro Circle via Khajaguda and Nanakramguda: This 9 km corridor will link major IT hubs, improving connectivity and reducing travel time for professionals commuting to and from these key areas.
- ITC Kohenur to JNTU via Mindspace Junction: An 8 km tunnel road designed to streamline traffic flow between these crucial points, easing congestion around one of Hyderabad’s busiest IT and educational corridors.
- ITC Kohenur to Road No. 10 in Banjara Hills via Road No. 45 in Jubilee Hills: Spanning 7 km, this route will enhance connectivity between prominent residential and commercial zones, facilitating smoother traffic movement in one of the city’s upscale regions.
- GVK One Mall to Nanal Nagar via Masab Tank: This 6 km tunnel will connect key commercial and residential areas, aiming to reduce the heavy traffic load typically experienced in these localities.
- Nampally to Chandrayangutta Inner Ring Road (IRR) via Charminar: Covering 9 km, this corridor will link central Hyderabad with the southern outskirts, providing a crucial passage through historic and densely populated areas, thereby alleviating traffic pressure on surface roads.

In addition to the tunnel roads, the government is implementing several other measures to tackle traffic issues. The Smart Traffic Management system will employ advanced technology to monitor and manage traffic flow in real-time, while HTRIMS will integrate various traffic control mechanisms for better efficiency.
The expansion of the metro rail network will offer an alternative mode of transport, expected to divert a significant number of commuters from road to rail. Flyovers and RUBs are being constructed to eliminate bottlenecks at critical junctions, and ongoing road and junction widening projects aim to accommodate more vehicles and ensure smoother traffic flow.
To support this infrastructure overhaul, the development of satellite townships around Hyderabad is also in progress. These townships are expected to decentralize the urban sprawl, providing residential and commercial hubs outside the main city, thus reducing the pressure on city roads.
This comprehensive plan by the Telangana government is poised to transform Hyderabad’s traffic landscape, significantly reducing congestion and improving the daily commuting experience for its residents.
