Thiruvananthapuram, June 24: In a rare display of unanimity, the Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Monday to change the state’s name from Kerala to ‘Keralam’. The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, received support from both the treasury and opposition benches.
The resolution will now be sent to the Centre for approval.
This move follows a similar resolution passed in August last year, which was also unanimously supported and sent to the Centre. That resolution sought “immediate steps” to amend the state’s name under Article 3 of the Constitution, which pertains to the formation of states and any alterations to their areas, boundaries, or names. However, the previous resolution did not materialize due to a technical objection.
Taking this into account, the Assembly decided to pass a fresh resolution on Monday, hoping to overcome the previous technical hurdle and successfully rename the state to ‘Keralam’.
