BJP Observes ‘Black Day’ in Telangana to Mark 50 Years of Emergency Imposed by Indira Gandhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana observed a ‘Black Day’ on Tuesday, commemorating 50 years since the Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 15, 1975. The event, held at the party office, featured BJP Rajya Sabha MP K. Laxman, who honored citizens who resisted the Emergency and highlighted their sacrifices in the fight for democracy.

Reflecting on the dark period of Emergency, Laxman recalled the severe atrocities and suppression of civil liberties endured by the nation. “We witnessed the horror of Emergency when freedom of press and freedom of expression were suppressed by the Congress,” Laxman stated, saluting the leaders who fought to protect democracy. He also criticized the Congress, alleging its history is filled with the killings of innocent people.

During a press conference, state BJP Vice President N.V.S.S Prabhakar accused the Congress of mocking the Constitution, claiming the party has repeatedly violated and misused it. “By organizing ‘black day’ programs, the BJP has exposed the misdeeds of Congress,” Prabhakar asserted.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines and state BJP President G. Kishan Reddy shared his thoughts on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency on social media. He described the period as a “harrowing episode in Indian history characterized by the brutal suppression of civil liberties, flagrant abuse of power, and systematic dismantling of democratic institutions.” Reddy emphasized the importance of remembering the dangers posed by Congress’ authoritarianism and its impact on the nation’s foundational principles.

Union Minister of State for Home, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the Congress has ‘Emergency DNA.’ “Holding the Constitution is not enough, as upholding the values enshrined in it is needed. Nobody has mocked the Constitution more than Congress,” Kumar said. He highlighted recent incidents of curbing freedom of speech and movement in Congress-ruled states, contrasting them with the good governance provided by the BJP-led NDA.

The BJP’s ‘Black Day’ observance in Telangana serves as a stark reminder of the nation’s struggle during the Emergency and honors those who fought to uphold democratic values.
