On Monday afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at VNUKOVO – II International Airport in Russia. The grand welcome, complete with a red carpet, has garnered significant attention from global experts, emphasizing the importance Russia places on its ties with India.

In a rare gesture, PM Modi was received by Russia’s first Deputy Prime Minister, Denis Manturov. Manturov’s presence and his accompanying of the Indian Prime Minister from the airport to the hotel in the same car underscored the high regard in which Russia holds India. Notably, this level of reception contrasts with the reception of Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, who was greeted by a lower-ranking Russian Deputy Prime Minister during his recent visit.

The itinerary of PM Modi’s two-day trip includes a dinner with Russian President Vladimir Putin, an interaction with the Indian diaspora, and participation in the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. This summit is expected to cover a range of issues of global interest, reflecting the deep and strategic partnership between the two countries.

Historically, India and Russia have maintained a robust and resilient relationship, withstanding numerous global challenges. Economically, Russia has been India’s largest arms supplier for decades. Despite the military conflict in Ukraine, India has continued to be a major buyer of discounted Russian oil, contributing significantly to Russia’s revenue.

The grand reception of PM Modi is a testament to the mutual confidence and trust between India and Russia, even as India diversifies its defence ties with Western powers. This move highlights India’s strategic approach to not remain dependent on a single nation for its weapons imports.

As the world media, including the Chinese, closely watches the outcomes of the 22nd Annual Summit, this event reiterates the significance of the India-Russia partnership in a rapidly changing global landscape.
