Vinesh Phogat’s Triumphant Journey to Paris Olympics Finals
Paris, August 06,2024
Vinesh Phogat, who faced severe adversity just a year ago, has now reached the finals of the Paris Olympics, determined to bring justice and honor to her name.
A Year of Struggle and Resilience
Phogat’s journey has been anything but easy. Dragged on the road, beaten by the police, and subjected to harassment, she staged protests for justice. Her fight against former BJP MP and wrestling president Brij Bhushan on allegations of sexual harassment against women wrestlers drew minimal support, with the government offering no backing. In a powerful statement against the injustice she faced, Phogat returned her hard-earned Khel Ratna Award and threatened to throw all her medals into the Ganga. Many critics dismissed her, saying her career was over, but Phogat did not waver in her determination.

Making History at the Paris Olympics
Against all odds, Vinesh Phogat has become the first Indian female wrestler to be selected for the Olympics three times. Despite low expectations, she has performed exceptionally well in Paris. After a series of victories, Phogat faced her toughest challenge in the pre-quarterfinals against Japan’s world number one and Tokyo gold medalist, Yee Susaki. Phogat emerged victorious with a 3-2 win. In the quarterfinals, she faced Ukraine’s world number one Oksana Livach and won 7-5 in a thrilling match, knocking out the top seed to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Phogat defeated Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez 5-0, making her the first Indian wrestler to reach the finals in wrestling at the Olympics. The final will be held on Wednesday, where she aims to secure India’s first medal in wrestling at these Games.
A Flood of Praise
Phogat’s remarkable journey has garnered praise from many, including Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. He lauded her fight and success, calling her victory over world number one Susaki unbelievable and a testament to her hard work and resilience.
Vinesh Phogat’s story is one of extraordinary perseverance and determination, inspiring many as she stands on the brink of Olympic glory.
