Powerful Earthquake Rocks Mulugu, Sends Panic Across Telugu States

Hyderabad, December 4,2024: The early hours of this morning brought an unsettling experience for residents in Mulugu and surrounding regions as a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck at precisely 7:27 AM. With its epicenter located in Mulugu district, the tremors were felt far and wide, sparking fear and panic in both Telangana and neighboring areas of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Widespread Impact Across Regions

The earthquake lasted for nearly 30 seconds, with vibrations strong enough to shake buildings and household items. Reports of tremors poured in from Hyderabad, Hanumakonda, Khammam, Kothagudem, Manuguru, Godavarikhani, Bhupalapally, Cherla, Chintakani, Bhadrachalam, Vijayawada, Jaggayyapeta, Tiruvuru, and Gampalagudem. In these areas, startled residents rushed out of their homes, many of them still in their nightclothes, fearing further shocks.

In Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, mild tremors were also experienced. The district administration acted promptly, with Collector Sanjay Daine issuing an appeal to the public. “We request all citizens to remain calm and vigilant. If you feel unsafe, move to open spaces outside buildings. Do not panic,” he advised.

Mulugu: The Epicenter of the Quake

Visual evidence from a CCTV camera in Mulugu captured the tremors as they occurred, showing objects and furniture shaking violently. Experts have confirmed that the earthquake’s impact was felt within a 200-kilometer radius of the epicenter.

Panic in Mahabubabad District

In Mahabubabad district, the quake was felt in Gudur, Kothaguda, and Gangaram mandals. Residents described the terrifying moment when beds, furniture, and utensils shook uncontrollably. “It felt like the earth was heaving beneath us. We’ve never experienced anything like this,” said one local resident.

The Strongest Quake in 20 Years

Officials revealed that this is the most intense earthquake to hit Telangana in two decades. The region, not known for frequent seismic activity, was caught off guard. Experts have pointed out the importance of disaster preparedness, as earthquakes can occur without warning.

Reactions from the Public and Authorities

The tremors sparked discussions across Telugu states, with many taking to social media to share their experiences. In some areas, schools and offices were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure. No major damages or casualties have been reported so far, but authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Collector Daine’s advisory has been echoed by disaster management teams, who recommend staying away from weak structures and gathering in open spaces during aftershocks. “Safety is our top priority. People must remain calm and not give in to panic,” he reiterated.

A Rare Occurrence in Telangana

While Telangana is not traditionally a high-risk zone for seismic activity, the earthquake has highlighted the need for better awareness and preparedness. Experts have attributed the quake to tectonic movements in the region but emphasized the importance of monitoring for any aftershocks.

The incident has left many wondering: Could this be a sign of more frequent seismic activity in the future? For now, residents are urged to remain cautious and heed advisories from local authorities.
