Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy hails Medak Cathedral’s centenary celebrations
Medak Cathedral, a historic and architectural marvel, marked its centenary with grandeur and national recognition. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy joined the celebrations in Medak, conveying Christmas greetings and honoring the Christian community’s contributions.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to the church’s development, citing the release of adequate funds for its upkeep. Reflecting on his past visit as the state Congress chief, Reddy shared his fulfillment of a vow to return as Chief Minister.
“Today, I celebrate Christmas and the centenary of this iconic church with the devout. The Congress government is committed to uplifting Dalit and tribal Christians, who are the primary beneficiaries of the Indiramma housing scheme and the 200 units of free power initiative,” he said.
Reddy lauded Christian missionaries for their pivotal role in education and healthcare, noting that their service inspired initiatives like fee reimbursement and Rajiv Arogyasri.
The Medak Cathedral, consecrated on December 25, 1924, stands as the largest diocese in Asia and the second-largest in the world, after the Vatican. Built by British missionary Charles Walker Fasnet during a famine under a “food for work” initiative, the church reflects a century of history, faith, and community service.
Architectural Splendor of Medak Cathedral
Spread over 300 acres, the Gothic Revival-style church is a masterpiece. Its 100-foot-wide, 200-foot-long structure accommodates 5,000 people. The stained glass windows are its most striking feature, depicting the Ascension, Nativity, and Crucifixion.
The bell tower, standing at 175 feet, is visible from miles away, while the mosaic tiles imported from Britain and decorative flooring by Italian masons exemplify exquisite craftsmanship. Soundproof roofing and finely-hewn grey stone pillars further enhance its unique design.
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma Participates in Pre-Centenary Event
