Owaisi Demands Repeal of Waqf Amendment Act, Announces April 19 Protest at Darussalam

Hyderabad, April 13:
AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it unconstitutional and discriminatory against the Muslim community.

Addressing the media, Owaisi referred to the law as a “black law” allegedly introduced by the BJP with support from NDA allies, and claimed it violates the spirit of the Indian Constitution.

“You are making a law that is against the Constitution of India, and you are imposing your ideology on the country. Your ideology should be Indian nationalism and the Constitution,” Owaisi asserted.

He questioned the rationale behind the amendment by comparing it to religious endowment provisions for other communities.

“How can something that is good for Hindu and Sikh communities be considered bad for Muslims?” he asked, citing that only Muslims are being restricted under the new provisions, while Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs retain broader rights over their religious endowment boards.

Owaisi argued that the Waqf Amendment Act undermines Articles 14, 15, 25, 26, and 29 of the Constitution, which guarantee equality, religious freedom, and protection of minority rights. He added that the Act neither aims to safeguard Waqf properties nor remove encroachments or enhance their revenue—but instead, reflects the government’s mistrust towards Muslims.

Addressing recent violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal during anti-Waqf Act protests, the Hyderabad MP reiterated his stance against violence:

“Protests should be peaceful. We have always condemned violence and will continue to do so. Violence of any kind is condemnable.”

To mobilize public awareness, Owaisi announced a massive protest meeting led by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on April 19 at AIMIM headquarters, Darussalam, Hyderabad.

The meeting will feature AIMPLB President Moulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, and leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, and other prominent Muslim organizations from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

MPs from the Parliamentary Waqf Committee and members of the Waqf Boards are also being invited to participate in the protest.

“Through this meeting, we want to make it clear how this Act harms the interests of Waqf and why it must be opposed,” Owaisi said.

The gathering is expected to be a major show of unity by Muslim organizations against what they describe as a threat to religious and constitutional rights.
