Thiruvananthapuram: Football fever has gripped Kerala as the state government declared a holiday on Monday for all schools, colleges, universities and professional educational institutions, enabling students to watch the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina without worrying about attending classes the next morning.
The decision was taken on the directions of Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan after thousands of football enthusiasts, especially students, appealed through social media for a holiday ahead of the highly anticipated final, which is scheduled to kick off at 12.30 a.m. IST on Monday.
The holiday applies to schools under the General Education Department as well as colleges, universities and professional institutions under the Higher Education Department.
Football enjoys immense popularity in Kerala, where the sport commands a fan following unlike any other state in India. In the run-up to the World Cup final, towns and villages across the state have been adorned with giant cut-outs of football stars, colourful banners, flags and decorative arches representing both Spain and Argentina.
Fan clubs have organised public screenings, rallies and celebrations across the state, creating a festive atmosphere as lakhs of supporters prepare to cheer for their favourite teams in one of football’s biggest spectacles.
The overwhelming response from football lovers played a crucial role in the government’s decision. Several schools in Ernakulam had already announced a holiday after receiving requests from students and parents. The state government’s order has now ensured a uniform holiday across Kerala.
Higher Education Minister Roji M. John said all higher education institutions, including professional colleges, would remain closed on Monday, allowing students to enjoy the World Cup final without the inconvenience of attending classes after a late-night match.
General Education Minister N. Samsudheen also confirmed the holiday for schools through a social media post, humorously asking, “Happy now, kids?” He said the government had taken the decision after considering the sentiments of football-loving students across the state.
With giant screens, public viewing centres and football-themed celebrations planned across Kerala, the state is set for another memorable night as fans unite to witness the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
