New Delhi, September 30: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the INDIA bloc would ensure that those whom the opposition holds responsible for allegedly “destroying” Indian democracy are held accountable, irrespective of their position or seniority.
Gandhi made the remarks after an INDIA bloc meeting at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, where opposition parties discussed their response to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and their proposed campaign on electoral issues.
Addressing reporters, Gandhi said the central issue discussed at the meeting was what the opposition describes as “vote chori”. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had attacked Indian democracy. These are allegations made by Gandhi and the opposition; they have been contested by the ruling side and the Election Commission.
Gandhi said the INDIA bloc leaders viewed themselves as “collective defenders” of the Constitution and would work together on electoral and democratic issues.
He also claimed that the opposition had succeeded in communicating its concerns about electoral processes to sections of the public and said there was growing resistance, particularly among young people.
INDIA Bloc Plans Nationwide Campaign
The meeting focused on preparing a joint action plan over the SIR exercise and other concerns relating to the Election Commission. The opposition parties have announced “Save Democracy” marches from October 2 to 8, while opposition MPs are scheduled to march to the Election Commission on October 6.
The Congress has demanded the rollback of the SIR exercise and has raised concerns about changes to electoral rolls. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has stated that SIR is part of its electoral-roll revision process and has provided a dedicated SIR 2026 section on its voter services portal. (voters.eci.gov.in)
The INDIA bloc’s latest meeting comes amid an intensifying political dispute between opposition parties and the Election Commission over electoral-roll revision and election procedures.
