Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli has created Formula 1 history by becoming the youngest-ever Formula One World Drivers’ Championship (WDC) winner at just 20 years old. The Italian secured his maiden world title with a third-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, 2026, breaking a long-standing record previously held by Sebastian Vettel.
Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish in Mexico City to mathematically secure the championship, irrespective of the results of his closest title rivals, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes teammate George Russell. However, the young Mercedes driver went beyond expectations, finishing third after a composed and impressive performance.
Antonelli Breaks Sebastian Vettel’s Record
At 20 years, 2 months and 7 days old, Antonelli has become the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history. He breaks Sebastian Vettel’s previous record, set in 2010 when the German won his first championship at 23 years and 4 months old.
The achievement marks a remarkable milestone for the Italian driver, who has emerged as one of Formula 1’s brightest young talents.

Verstappen Wins Mexican GP, Antonelli Takes Championship
The Mexico City Grand Prix delivered plenty of drama. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed the race victory, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who secured second place for Ferrari.
Antonelli crossed the finish line in third, collecting 15 championship points and securing the 2026 drivers’ crown.
The race featured a red flag following a crash involving Valtteri Bottas and a late Safety Car after an incident involving Arvid Lindblad. Antonelli maintained his composure through the interruptions to secure the podium finish he needed.

A Dream Season for Mercedes’ Young Star
Antonelli’s 2026 campaign has been outstanding. His consistent performances, race victories and ability to handle pressure helped him build a substantial championship lead over his competitors.
His title victory is also a significant achievement for Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolff, whose faith in the young Italian has produced a historic result.
With this triumph, Antonelli joins the elite group of Formula 1 World Champions and becomes the first driver of his generation to claim the sport’s biggest individual honour.
The 2026 season will be remembered as the year Kimi Antonelli announced himself as a new world champion and rewrote Formula 1 history.
