Hyderabad’s Iconic Hussainsagar Lake to Receive Fresh Water Flow

Hyderabad, May 21, 2023: In a significant move to combat pollution caused by sewage and industrial waste, the Telangana State Cabinet has made a decision to infuse fresh water into Hussainsagar Lake, one of the city’s renowned landmarks. The plan involves diverting clean waters from the River Godavari into Hussainsagar, ensuring a consistent supply of pristine water for the lake. This initiative aims to breathe new life into the water body, which has suffered from environmental degradation in recent years.

Recognizing the growing importance of Hussainsagar as a popular tourist attraction, surrounded by modern developments such as the State Secretariat, the rejuvenation of Tank Bund, and notable landmarks like the towering 125-foot statue of BR Ambedkar and the Telangana Martyrs Memorial, the government has taken this step to address concerns from tourists and local residents alike. The unpleasant odor emanating from the lake has been a persistent issue, hindering the promotion of water sports and boating activities.

To ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of this endeavor, the Telangana Irrigation and CAD Department (ICAD) will conduct an extensive survey. Two proposals are under consideration. The first option involves the installation of a dedicated independent water pipeline, spanning approximately 55-60 kilometers, connecting Kondapochamma Sagar to Hussainsagar. The second proposal suggests establishing a connection between the Osmansagar reservoir and Hussainsagar, utilizing either a pipeline or an existing channel.

Osmansagar, situated at a higher elevation with a level of 545 meters compared to Hussainsagar’s 514-meter height, offers the advantage of gravity flow. The Chief Minister is already aware of the existence of the Balkapur channel, historically utilized to transfer water from Gandipet to Hussainsagar along a natural contour.

Beyond the revitalization of Hussainsagar, the State government has also unveiled plans to bring an additional 7,000 million cubic feet of Godavari water from Kondapochamma Sagar and Mallannasagar reservoirs to Himayatsagar and Osmansagar. These comprehensive measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to safeguarding and enhancing the region’s water resources.

As Hyderabad continues to flourish and expand, the rejuvenation of Hussainsagar Lake through the infusion of fresh water will serve as a crucial step towards preserving the city’s natural heritage and providing a cleaner environment for residents and visitors alike.
