Sam Pitroda, Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of suppressing discussions and regressing India in the name of Hindutva, while emphasizing that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has a significant opportunity to shape the country according to their vision. Pitroda stated that the real battle lies in contrasting ideas.
In an interview with IANS, Pitroda expressed concerns about the impact of the BJP’s nine-year rule, claiming that democracy and the constitution have been undermined. He highlighted a lack of confidence in institutions such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax (IT) department, courts, and universities, where free expression is allegedly curtailed.
Pitroda emphasized the absence of rational conversations and the prevalence of divisive religious and past-focused narratives, diverting attention from science, the economy, and job creation. He cautioned against being misled in the name of Hindutva and called for a focus on building a nation that respects everyone.
The technocrat underscored that while the Congress could not resolve all issues over the past 70 years, it has made significant contributions. Responding to setbacks in the Gandhi family’s public image, Pitroda defended their integrity, citing their contributions to the nation and their custodianship of the idea of Indian democracy. He criticized the BJP for launching misinformation campaigns and spending substantial resources to tarnish the Gandhi family’s reputation.
Pitroda urged the Indian people to choose between an India envisioned by the BJP and RSS, or one represented by the Congress, promoting peace and harmony. He stressed the need to focus on the future, embrace science, and refrain from unnecessary battles rooted in history and religion. Pitroda highlighted that the recent Bharat Jodo Yatra helped Rahul Gandhi and the party reconnect with people’s voices, instilling confidence and reaffirming the values of India.
The IOC chairman acknowledged the challenge of countering the RSS, which has been actively shaping its vision for several decades. He emphasized that the fight transcends politics and instead revolves around defining the nation’s future. Pitroda reiterated that democracy belongs to all citizens and should not be restricted to a single group.
