*New Delhi ; – A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) has shed light on the financial status of sitting Rajya Sabha MPs. Out of the 225 analyzed MPs, a staggering 27 of them are billionaires, with six hailing from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to the report, the average assets of these Rajya Sabha MPs stand at a staggering Rs 80.93 crore. The report also noted that one seat in the current Rajya Sabha is vacant, and three MPs’ criminal background details could not be analyzed as their affidavits were unavailable. Additionally, four seats representing Jammu and Kashmir remain undefined.
The report revealed that the BJP boasts the highest number of billionaires among its Rajya Sabha MPs, with assets exceeding Rs 100 crore. The breakdown of billionaires across major parties is as follows:
- BJP: 6 billionaires (7% of 85 Rajya Sabha MPs)
- Congress: 4 billionaires (13% of 30 Congress Rajya Sabha MPs)
- YSRCP: 4 billionaires (44% of 9 YSRCP Rajya Sabha MPs)
- AAP: 3 billionaires (30% of 10 AAP Rajya Sabha MPs)
- TRS: 3 billionaires (43% of 7 Rajya Sabha MPs from TRS)
- RJD: 2 billionaires (33% of 6 Rajya Sabha MPs from RJD)
The report also highlighted that Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of MPs with assets exceeding Rs 100 crore, followed by Telangana and Maharashtra. The state-wise distribution of such MPs is as follows:
- Andhra Pradesh: 5 MPs (45% of 11 from Andhra Pradesh)
- Telangana: 3 MPs (43% of 7 from Telangana)
- Maharashtra: 3 MPs (16% of 19 from Maharashtra)
- Delhi: 1 MP (33% of 3 from Delhi)
- Punjab: 2 MPs (29% of 7 from Punjab)
- Haryana: 1 MP (20% of 5 from Haryana)
- Madhya Pradesh: 2 MPs (18% of 11 from Madhya Pradesh)
