Indian Citizenship Request of Telangana Congress’ NRI Leader, Jhansi Reddy, Rejected
Hyderabad, October 27: In a significant setback for the Congress party’s NRI leader, Jhansi Reddy, authorities have declined her application for Indian citizenship.
Jhansi Reddy, an American citizen, had sought a Congress ticket to contest from the Palakurthi Assembly constituency. However, the Hyderabad District Collector conveyed to Reddy that her request for Indian citizenship could not be entertained, citing her failure to meet the requirement of continuous residence in India for one year immediately preceding the application date.
She had applied for Indian citizenship under Section 5 (1) (g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The District Collector’s response stated that she arrived in India on June 16, 2022, but did not fulfill the mandatory condition of residing in India continuously for 12 months before submitting the application.
The Collector informed her that she could reapply for citizenship once she meets all the conditions as stipulated in the rules of the Indian Citizenship Act, 2009.
Jhansi Reddy is the founder and president of the US-based organization, Women Empowerment Telugu Association, which is dedicated to creating opportunities for women. She has been actively involved in philanthropic initiatives in the Palakurthi constituency, currently represented by BRS leader and Minister for Panchayat Raj, E. Dayakar Rao. Her active campaign in the constituency had been fueled by her expectations of receiving a Congress ticket.
