Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has raised concerns about the rising inflation and increasing food prices as Diwali approaches. In a social media post, she highlighted the steep increase in onion prices, despite India being the second-largest onion-producing country. She questioned the storage and maintenance of the onions, given that the country produced 31 lakh metric tonnes of onions last year.
Furthermore, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra pointed out that other essential food items like sugar, arhar (pigeon pea), and urad pulses have also become unaffordable for the common people. The rising prices of these basic foodstuffs are causing hardship for ordinary citizens and making it challenging for them to celebrate the festival of Diwali.
The opposition, including the Congress party, has been consistently criticizing the government over the increasing prices of essential commodities in recent days. Onions, in particular, have reached exorbitant prices, with rates as high as Rs 70-80 per kilogram in local markets in the national capital.
The surge in food prices has become a major concern for many households, especially during the festive season when families traditionally prepare special meals and sweets to celebrate Diwali. The opposition’s demands for the government to address this issue have grown louder as citizens grapple with the economic impact of rising inflation.
