New Delhi, December 13: Google has unveiled a new ‘Timeline’ feature in Maps, designed to assist users in recalling places they have visited. This enhancement allows users to store their Timeline directly on their device, offering greater control over personal data.

The functionality is powered by a feature known as Location History. In a blog post on Tuesday, Google reassured users about data security, stating, “If you’re getting a new phone or are worried about losing your existing one, you can always choose to back up your data to the Cloud so it doesn’t get lost. We’ll automatically encrypt your backed-up data so no one can read it, including Google.”

Additionally, Google revealed that with the activation of Location History, the default auto-delete control will be set to three months, automatically removing data older than that period. This is a significant reduction from the previous default of 18 months. Users desiring a lengthier retention of memories on their Timeline can opt to extend the period or disable auto-delete controls entirely.

These updates are expected to roll out gradually throughout the next year on both Android and iOS platforms. Users will be notified when the update becomes available for their accounts.

In another development, Google introduced new controls for the blue dot on Google Maps, providing users with easy access to essential location settings. Tapping the blue dot reveals whether Location History or Timeline settings are activated and whether Maps has access to the device’s location.

The new blue dot controls will be progressively released in the coming weeks on both Android and iOS.
