
Sonia Gandhi, CPP Chairperson, Denounces Government’s Assault on Democracy in Fiery Speech

In a powerful address at the CPP meeting today, Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi criticized the government, alleging a strangulation of democracy. She expressed dismay over the suspension of numerous Opposition MPs for a reasonable demand regarding the events of December 13th.
Gandhi lamented the government’s arrogance in responding to a simple request for a statement by the Home Minister in the Lok Sabha. She accused the Prime Minister of showing disdain for parliamentary dignity by addressing the nation outside the Parliament four days after the incident.

The CPP Chairperson asserted the party’s consistent stance on Jammu & Kashmir, calling for the immediate restoration of full statehood and prompt elections. She emphasized the importance of addressing the aspirations of the people of Ladakh.
Gandhi criticized the Women’s Reservation Bill, deeming its implementation conditional on delimitation or a census as an attempt to mislead women. She urged for immediate implementation, covering women from all communities, including the OBC community.
The Congress leader congratulated party colleagues in Telangana for their dedication in the assembly elections and highlighted the passage of the Bill establishing a Central Tribal University in Telangana.
Addressing the disappointing election results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, Gandhi expressed confidence in overcoming challenges. She highlighted the party’s guiding ideology and values, urging unity and resilience.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi accused the government of assaulting democracy and weakening the spirit of unity. She emphasized the widening economic inequalities, soaring unemployment, and concentration of wealth, pledging to take these issues to the public.
Gandhi thanked Mallikarjun Kharge for his leadership and applauded CPP office bearers, colleagues, and workers for their efforts. She urged the party to channel disappointment into a positive drive for the upcoming general elections. Finally, expressing gratitude for cooperation, Gandhi wished all members the very best for 2024 and beyond.
