Hyderabad, December 20: President Droupadi Murmu engaged with weavers in Pochampally, located in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, on Wednesday. During her visit, she toured the handloom and spinning unit and interacted with the skilled Ikat handloom weavers of Pochampally.

While exploring the theme pavilion, the President observed the intricate art of weaving Ikat sarees, for which Pochampally is renowned. She commended the dedication of Pochampally weavers in preserving the traditional art of weaving and expressed admiration for their efforts to pass on this craft to future generations.

President Murmu enthusiastically welcomed the suggestions provided by the weavers, promising that their insights would be taken into serious consideration. She assured them of her commitment to the development of Pochampally, a hub celebrated for its unique Ikat sarees, which were granted Geographical Indicator (GI) status in 2004.

During the interaction, a weaver appealed to the President for the establishment of a yarn depot in Pochampally. The region has gained recognition not only for its exquisite sarees but also for the distinctive Ikat weaving style. Pochampally was acknowledged as one of the best tourism villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

President Murmu, currently residing at Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad as part of her annual southern sojourn, reached Pochampally via helicopter. State ministers Tummala Nageswara Rao and Seethakka, along with senior officials, were also in attendance during this significant visit.
