UGC Issues Warning Regarding M.Phil. Degrees: Not Recognized Anymore
In a recent development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has raised concerns about certain universities continuing to offer admissions to M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) programs, despite the degree losing its recognition status. The UGC, through an official notification, highlighted that Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022 explicitly prohibits Higher Educational Institutions from providing M.Phil. courses.

The Commission expressed its awareness that some universities are actively inviting fresh applications for M.Phil. programs, despite the regulatory changes. This announcement serves as a crucial reminder to students, as pursuing an M.Phil. degree from these institutions may not be recognized or accredited.
The UGC emphasizes that the decision to discontinue the M.Phil. degree was made to streamline and enhance the quality of higher education in accordance with the latest regulations. Students are strongly advised to verify the recognition status of academic programs before applying to ensure that their educational pursuits align with the established standards.

The regulatory framework, as outlined in the UGC guidelines, aims to maintain the integrity and credibility of academic qualifications. Prospective students are urged to exercise caution and diligence in choosing their educational paths, keeping in mind the evolving landscape of accredited degrees and qualifications.
This advisory underscores the UGC’s commitment to upholding the quality and validity of degrees offered by Higher Educational Institutions. It serves as a timely alert for students to make well-informed decisions about their academic journey, considering the recognized programs that align with the UGC regulations for the award of Ph.D. degrees.
