At the age of 91, Prabha Atre had been experiencing breathing issues and reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while being rushed to the hospital.

A recipient of prestigious accolades including the Padmashri (1990), Padma Bhushan (2002), and Padma Vibhushan (2022), Prabha Atre was a maestro in rendering khayals, thumris, ghazals, dadri, bhajans, and natyasangeet. Her significant impact on classical music extended beyond her vocal prowess, as she was also recognized for inventing new Raagas such as ‘Apurva Kalyan,’ ‘Madhur Kauns,’ ‘Darbari Kauns,’ ‘Patdeep-Malhar,’ ‘Shiv Kali,’ ‘Tilang-Bhairav,’ and ‘Ravi Bhairav.’

In addition to her remarkable singing career, Prabha Atre authored influential books on music composition, namely ‘Swarangini’ and ‘Swaranjanee.’ She left an indelible mark by composing music for a full-length dance recital titled ‘Natya Prabha’ and adapting a music composition for jazz by a distinguished artist from the Netherlands. Prabha Atre’s legacy also includes creating music for various musical-dramas or sangeetikas.

The classical music community mourns the loss of a true maestro, whose musical journey and contributions have left an enduring impact on the world of Indian classical music.
