New Delhi, Feb 23: Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, expressed concern on Friday over potential violations of Indian IT laws by Google’s Gemini AI chatbot.
Chandrasekhar’s reaction followed users on the social media platform X posting Gemini AI responses regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent political figures from various countries.
“This #GeminiAI from @google is not just woke, it’s downright malicious @GoogleIndia. The GOI should take note,” remarked a user in response to Gemini AI’s comments on political figures.
In response, Chandrasekhar stated, “These are direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act and violations of several provisions of the Criminal code. @GoogleAI @GoogleIndia @GoI_MeitY.”
Earlier this week, Google paused Gemini AI’s ability to generate images of people due to controversy surrounding inaccuracies in AI-generated historical images.
The controversy arose when images generated by Gemini AI portrayed specific white figures (such as the US ‘Founding Fathers’) and Nazi-era German soldiers as “people of colour”.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also accused Google of running “racist, anti-civilizational programming” with its artificial intelligence (AI) models.
Google commenced offering image generation via its Gemini (formerly Bard) AI platform earlier this month.
