In a remarkable case, a young woman from Mumbai has been cured of epilepsy, which she battled for 12 years, following a surgical procedure in which a neurosurgeon removed a portion of her brain, as per an official from Apex Hospitals.

The patient, identified as Smita Trivedi, 34, who works in a private company, experienced her first epileptic episode during her college years. Subsequently, she grappled with the condition, facing recurring headaches and other impediments that disrupted her education, work, and personal life, including caring for her husband and child.

Despite being on heavy medication, including five daily doses for the past five years, concerns lingered for both the patient and her family.

Seeking a solution, her husband consulted neurosurgeon Dr. Samir Parekh at Apex Hospital’s Kandivali branch to explore options for reducing her medication.

Following assessments, Dr. Parekh recommended brain surgery, as medications failed to control her epilepsy and accompanying seizures. The surgery, termed temporal lobectomy and involving the removal of the affected left temporal lobe, including the amygdala and hippocampus, was conducted in late November 2023.

Post-surgery, Trivedi showed remarkable improvement, regaining consciousness, speech, and mobility shortly after the operation. Within days, she resumed her work without the previous hindrances.

After three months, she was down to two medications, and currently, she only requires one dose, with further adjustments planned based on her progress.

Epilepsy, a condition characterized by abnormal brain activity leading to seizures and altered consciousness, affects millions globally. In India, where it’s prevalent, many struggle to access proper treatment due to stigma, lack of awareness, and limited healthcare resources, especially in rural areas.
