Hyderabad, March 17: Telangana state is witnessing a substantial surge in electricity consumption this March compared to the same period last year, with consumption levels soaring by one and a half million units. Daily electricity supply has exceeded 300 million units, attributed to increased usage driven by intensified sun exposure and heightened agricultural activities.
In the Greater Hyderabad region, which serves as the state’s economic and technological hub, electricity consumption has surged by an astounding 30 percent compared to March last year. For instance, on March 12 alone, consumption spiked from 52.95 million units last year to 72.73 million units this year, showcasing a significant increase in demand.
Despite this surge in demand, Telangana’s power distribution companies (discoms) have managed to meet the full electricity demand through effective implementation of a power banking policy. This policy allows for the procurement of electricity from other states during periods of low supply and the supply of excess electricity to them during periods of high supply, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply to consumers across the state.
Furthermore, in a commendable move, the purchase cost of electricity has been halved, thanks to the successful implementation of the power banking policy. By procuring electricity from states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh at reduced rates of avarage Rs.5 per unit, compared to the earlier Rs.10-Rs.21 per unit during peak demand periods, discoms have not only ensured adequate supply but also eased the financial burden on consumers.
This milestone achievement underscores Telangana’s commitment to meeting the growing electricity demands of its populace while simultaneously implementing innovative solutions to mitigate financial pressures on consumers. As the state continues to pursue sustainable development initiatives, the successful implementation of the power banking policy serves as a testament to its proactive approach towards addressing energy challenges.
