“Lok Sabha Election 2024: Majority of Candidates with Criminal Cases Belong to BJP in Phase One”

An ADR report reveals concerning statistics regarding the Lok Sabha Elections-2024, particularly in the first phase slated for April 19. According to the report, a significant portion of candidates with criminal backgrounds in the initial phase represent the BJP. Out of 1,618 candidates contesting in the first round, 252 have declared criminal cases, with 161 facing serious charges.

Specifically, 28 BJP candidates are facing criminal charges, while Congress follows closely behind with 19 candidates. Other parties with candidates entangled in legal issues include AIADMK, DMK, CPI, CPM, AAP, Shiv Sena, and NCP (Sharad Pawar) parties.

The cases against these candidates are alarming, with 15 admitting guilt in their affidavits. Additionally, seven candidates face murder charges (IPC Section-302), while 19 face charges of attempted murder (IPC Section 307). Furthermore, 18 candidates have cases related to crimes against women, including one with a rape charge. Shockingly, 35 candidates have cases concerning hate speeches.

This revelation brings to light the Supreme Court’s 2020 directive urging political parties to justify their selection of candidates with criminal backgrounds.
