A relative of one of the assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is vying for a parliamentary seat in Punjab’s Faridkot (Reserved) constituency as an Independent candidate.
Sarabjit Singh Khalsa (45), a Class XII dropout, is the son of Beant Singh, one of the two assailants who killed the late Prime Minister.
Khalsa had previously contested the Lok Sabha elections from Fatehgarh Sahib (Reserved) and Bathinda seats in 2014 and 2009, respectively, without success. In 2019, he ran as a candidate for the Bahujan Samaj Party.
Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, both bodyguards of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, fatally shot her on October 31, 1984, at her residence.
In the 2014 election affidavit, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa declared assets worth Rs 3.5 crore.
His mother, Bimal Kaur, and grandfather, Sucha Singh, were elected as Members of Parliament from Ropar and Bathinda, respectively, in 1989.
