Former Chief Justice of India, AM Ahmadi, passed away on March 2, 2023, at the age of 95. Justice Ahmadi was elevated to the Supreme Court in December 1988 and served as Chief Justice of India from 1994 to 1995.

Born on February 22, 1928, in Gujarat, Justice Ahmadi completed his law degree from the Government Law College in Mumbai and began his legal career in 1952. He served as a judge of the Gujarat High Court and the Rajasthan High Court before being appointed as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in 1988.

During his tenure as Chief Justice of India, Justice Ahmadi delivered several landmark judgments, including the judgment in the famous “Hindutva case” that defined the scope of the term “Hindutva” and its relation to the concept of “Hinduism”. He also made significant contributions to the field of judicial reforms and was a strong advocate for judicial independence.

Justice Ahmadi will be remembered as a highly respected and distinguished jurist who made significant contributions to the Indian legal system. His passing is a great loss to the legal fraternity and the country as a whole.
