Hyderabad: The Amara Raja Group is set to commence commercial production at its 1.5 GWh battery pack assembly unit within the next two months. This facility is part of the company’s ambitious ₹9,500 crore investment plan over ten years to establish a state-of-the-art lithium-ion cell gigafactory near Hyderabad.
According to M. Jagadish, Chief Technology Officer of Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies, this marks the first phase of the 5 GWh battery pack assembly unit. The inauguration of this phase is anticipated within the next one to two months, heralding a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards bolstering India’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
The Amara Raja Group had announced in December 2022 its comprehensive plans to develop a 16 GWh lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility along with the battery pack assembly unit in Mahabubnagar, located near Hyderabad. This venture is set to play a crucial role in positioning India as a key player in the global EV market.
Chief Operations Officer Niranjan C outlined that while commercial production of the lithium-ion cells is projected to begin around October 2026, the company will in the interim import cells and assemble batteries. These batteries will be supplied to electric vehicle manufacturers, addressing the immediate demand within the industry and ensuring a seamless transition once domestic cell production is fully operational.
The construction of the cell manufacturing facility, which will be executed in phases, is expected to commence shortly. This phased approach ensures meticulous planning and execution, aligning with the company’s long-term vision of sustainable growth and technological innovation.
The Amara Raja Group’s significant investment underscores its commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and supporting India’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. The successful launch of the battery pack assembly unit will mark a pivotal step towards realizing these objectives, fostering job creation, and driving economic growth in the region.
As the world transitions towards greener energy solutions, Amara Raja’s initiatives in the lithium-ion battery sector will contribute to the broader adoption of electric vehicles, promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
