India is intensifying efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing across various industries, and steel producers in the country are leading the way by achieving the ‘Made in India’ labeling for their products.
The initiative, first launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and conceptualized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has been implemented by the Ministry of Steel. This step not only enhances the attractiveness of Indian steel products to buyers but also ensures standardized quality.
In November last year, the Ministry of Steel’s Consultative Committee discussed the progress of this unique initiative, aimed at introducing branding and labeling of ‘Made-in-India’ steel products in the global market. Former Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted that this initiative would ensure standardized quality across products made by Indian steel producers (ISPs).
Currently, at least 80 percent of ISPs have successfully labeled their products with ‘Made in India’, with the remainder expected to do so by the end of this month. Each labeled product is equipped with a QR code that provides detailed information about the domestic steel product.
The Ministry of Steel has pioneered this branding exercise, setting a single brand identity for Indian-made steel that represents the country’s robust manufacturing potential. The branding initiative covers select products of all major ISPs, and the ISPs-QCI portal Application Programming Interface (API) integration has been completed for Label and QR code authentication.
Former Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the importance of establishing India as a global manufacturing hub, necessitating a unified and distinctive identity for Indian steel that showcases its quality, innovation, and sustainability practices.
Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy recently expressed commitment to increasing production across the country under the guidance of PM Modi, focusing on generating employment opportunities.
