Indian Boxers Set for Final Pre-Olympics Training Camp in Germany
Five Indian boxers set to compete in the Paris Olympics will embark on a crucial month-long training camp at the Olympic Centre in Saarbrucken, Germany, starting from June 28. This training camp marks their final preparations ahead of the Games, providing them with valuable opportunities to spar with top boxers from various countries.
Amit Panghal (51kg), the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, will continue training at the Sports Authority of India’s Shilaroo centre with his coaches and support staff, joining the team later in France. The contingent, supported by REC Limited, includes world champion Nikhat Zareen (50kg), 2023 World Championships bronze medallist Nishant Dev (71kg), Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), and Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (57kg).
“The training camp in Saarbrucken will provide the Indian contingent with the opportunity to spar with quality boxers and acclimatise to similar weather conditions expected in Paris,” stated Hemanta Kumar Kalita, Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India.
The camp in Saarbrucken will host national squads from Ireland, USA, Mongolia, Germany, and Denmark, among others, enhancing the preparation for the Indian boxers who will stay till July 22 before heading to Paris for the Olympics.
India has a proud Olympic boxing history, with three bronze medals won so far. Vijender Singh clinched the nation’s first medal in 2008, followed by Mary Kom in 2012. Lovlina Borgohain aims to become only the third Indian and second woman to win back-to-back Olympic medals, joining the ranks of wrestler Sushil Kumar and badminton player P.V. Sindhu as India’s consecutive medalists in the Olympics.
The upcoming Olympics promise to be a pivotal moment for Indian boxing, with hopes high for further historic achievements in Paris.
