The Embassy of India in Seoul has issued a warning to Indian nationals residing in South Korea about a rising number of voice phishing scams targeting them. This advisory follows numerous calls from the Indian community reporting such incidents in recent days.
According to the advisory issued on Tuesday, the scammers typically claim to be from the South Korean immigration authorities. They allege discrepancies in the victim’s visa and threaten deportation unless a financial penalty is paid. Many Indians have reportedly fallen victim to these scams and made payments.
The Embassy advises Indian nationals to exercise extreme caution when sharing personal information on social media platforms or with third parties. If you receive suspicious calls, you should record details such as the caller’s phone number, the claims made, and any other relevant information, and report them to the Embassy of India via email. Additionally, lodge a complaint with the local police authorities.
The Embassy emphasized the importance of vigilance to avoid falling prey to such scams and encouraged the community to stay informed and report any suspicious activities.
