Doctors at SRM Global Hospitals in Chennai have successfully treated jaundice in a 78-year-old end-stage pancreatic cancer patient from Bangladesh using advanced medical technology.

The patient was admitted with jaundice-related symptoms, including loss of appetite, severe itching, and sleeplessness. Gastroenterologist N.A. Rajesh explained that the jaundice was caused by a tumor obstructing the bile duct, leading to bile accumulation.

“The patient was unable to continue chemotherapy due to the jaundice,” Dr. Rajesh noted.

Given the patient’s advanced age and physical frailty, the medical team decided on a minimally invasive procedure called choledochoduodenostomy. This procedure, guided by advanced endoscopic ultrasound technology, involved creating a stent-supported new pathway between the bile duct and the duodenum (part of the small intestine), allowing the bile to drain.

Following the procedure, the patient experienced significant improvement, including a restored appetite and relief from severe itching and sleeplessness. The patient has since returned to Bangladesh, where he will receive palliative cancer care.

Dr. Rajesh emphasized that this advanced treatment has provided significant relief and improved the quality of life for the patient, enabling him to continue his cancer care in his home country.
